Help Prevent Electrical Wall Fires  in Concealed Spaces

8% of home fires are caused by faulty wiring in wall assemblies or concealed spaces. – NFPA Report of February 2022 by Richard Campbell

The current plates do not protect the cables or conductors as the wire passes through the framing members or furring strip as the NEC requires, contributing to the cause of home fires.

Frequently asked Questions

Why Vince LaPorta Invented the XtenderPRO™ Plate System?

Words from the Inventor

It became apparent to me after working as an electrical inspector for over thirty-nine years, it was time someone addressed the problem…. that the protection plates available on the market are not adequate.

The plates in the market today being used to protect the wire only covers directly over the framing member or furring strip. The design of the antiquated plates also does not adhere to section 300.4 of the National Electric Code (NEC) created in 1990 that requires protection to extend 1 ¼” on each side of the framing member or furring strip.  Electrical inspectors were left in a precarious position of not enforcing the code as intended, as current protection plates were not providing the protection needed. Whereby, I decided to design an extender protection plate that would both adhere to the (NEC) and provide the protection needed to help prevent wire damage and inner wall fires.

I invented and patented two types of plates. The brand name is XtenderPRO™ Plate System that consists of the XtenderPRO™ Lift Plate™ and the XtenderPRO™ Cross Plate™. Both plates I designed have the 1 ¼” extension on both sides that provide the needed safety when installing electrical wires within confined walls.

I am proud to have developed the  XtenderPRO™ Plate System, with the patented Lift Plate™ and Cross Plate™—to finally offer a simple, code-compliant solution that protects wire, improves safety,  saves time and money for installers.

— Vince LaPorta, Inventor and Electrical Inspector

Why is Patented XtenderPRO™ Plate System Important?

The XtenderPRO™ Plate System addresses critical issues regarding electrical wire and cable protection in wall assemblies and confined spaces. The current protection plates on the market do not adequately protect wiring. They do not extend past the framing member or furring strip as specified by NEC Section 300.4. The protection is required to extend 1-¼” beyond the framing member and furring strip to help prevent wire damage.

The XtenderPRO™ Plate System—features the patented Cross Plate™ and Lift Plate™.  Each XtenderPRO™plate will extend metal protection 1-½” on each side of the framing member or furring strip—exceeding the required 1-¼” spacing outlined in NEC Section 300.4 ensuring compliance with NEC standards. The XtenderPRO™ Plate System will significantly enhance safety by reducing the risk of wire damage that can lead to electrical fires within wall assemblies and concealed spaces.

According to the NFPA’s February 2022 report by Richard Campbell, faulty wiring in these areas causes approximately 8% of home fires annually—an estimated 2,608 incidents per year.

How the Patented XtenderPRO™ Plate System Improves Wire Installation in Buildings?

The XtenderPRO™ Cross Plate™ and Lift Plate™ offer a significant improvement to traditional wiring methods by addressing key safety and code compliance concerns during installation.

  1. NEC Compliance and Enhanced Protection
The XtenderPRO™ Plate System extends metal protection 1-½” on each side of the framing member or furring strip—exceeding the NEC-required 1-¼” spacing outlined in NEC Section 300.4. This ensures full compliance while providing added protection to the wire cable or raceway types in wall assemblies.
  2. Built-In Wire Support with the Lift Plate
The XtenderPRO™ Lift Plate™ supports and elevates the wire above the baseboard height without the need for additional standoffs or makeshift solutions. This not only reduces labor and material costs but also ensures a consistent, safer method.
  3. Time-Saving and Cost-Effective
By simplifying the wire path and eliminating the need for extra staples or standoffs, the XtenderPRO™ Plate System saves installers time and money—while delivering a safer, more secure installation.

XtenderPRO™ Plate System provides a smarter, safer, and code-compliant solution for wire protection and support in both residential and commercial buildings.

About the Inventor

Vince LaPorta, has been in the electrical industry for 45 years.  During his respected career he has been an electrical inspector, electrical plans examiner and a licensed building official in Florida for the last 29 years. A member of NFPA, IAEI, and BOAF, he has extensive experience inspecting residential and commercial buildings.

While working as an Electrical Inspector, Vince identified that protection plates in the market failed to meet the 2023 NEC Section 300.4 standards, contributing to home fires caused by faulty wiring. Determined to address this issue, he developed the patented XtenderPro™ Plate System, designed to extend NM Cable protection to meet code requirements and enhance fire safety.
